My Worship Time Focus:
"The Incisive Question"
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Matthew
22:41-42a
Message of the verses: “41 Now while the
Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying,
"What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?’”
Just
to let you know up front that this will be a very short SD, which is ok with me
as I have a very busy day scheduled.
Now
remember we have been looking at three questions that were asked of Jesus, and
this happened after three different indictments against the Jewish leaders in
the form of parables. Jesus answered
those questions conclusively as these Jewish leaders were trying to trap Him,
but that is impossible to do. This all
happened on Wednesday of Passion Week while in the Temple that Jesus had previously
cleansed the day before.
Now
we see as we begin to look at verse 41 that the Pharisees were gathered
together by themselves, no doubt more perplexed than ever as to what they could
do to discredit and eliminate Jesus.
They were obviously standing nearby, and while they were pondering what
their next move would be, Jesus then asked them a question about the Christ.
I will conclude with a quotation from MacArthur’s
commentary as he concludes his commentary on this section. “He did not, however, ask directly about
Himself. Although He often had declared
His messiahship and His divinity, He now wanted the Pharisees to focus on what
they already believed about the identity of the Messiah, the Christ, God’s
promised Anointed One. Specifically, He
asked, ‘whose son is He?’ That is, from what Jewish line was He to be
descended?”
