PT-3 “In a Synagogue” (Luke 6:6-11)

EVENING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/10/2026 9:38 PM

My Worship Time                                                                         Focus: PT-3 “In a Synagogue”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                                  Reference:  Luke 6:6-11

            Bible Reading & Meditation “On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught; and a man was there whose right hand was withered. Now the scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him [closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse Him. But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and come forward!” And he got up and came forward. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you whether it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 And after looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so; and his hand was restored. 11 But they themselves were filled with senseless rage, and began discussing together what they might do to Jesus.”

            I will pick up from where I left off in this morning's SD by continue to quote from John MacArthur’s commentary, and I will let you know that there is a fairly long quote from the book of Isaiah in this part of his commentary.

            “The scribes and Pharisees knew the correct answer to Jesus’ question, which the book of Isaiah records.  In two passages in Isaiah God indicted Israel for their superficial, shallow, false religion—the very issue Jesus was addressing:

Isaiah 1:11–17 (NASB95):

11“What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me?”

Says the LORD.

“I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams

And the fat of fed cattle;

And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats.

12“When you come to appear before Me,

Who requires of you this trampling of My courts?

13“Bring your worthless offerings no longer,

Incense is an abomination to Me.

New moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies—

I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly.

14“I hate your new moon festivals and your appointed feasts,

They have become a burden to Me;

I am weary of bearing them.

15“So when you spread out your hands in prayer,

I will hide My eyes from you;

Yes, even though you multiply prayers,

I will not listen.

Your hands are covered with blood.

16“Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;

Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight.

Cease to do evil,

17Learn to do good;

Seek justice,

Reprove the ruthless,

Defend the orphan,

Plead for the widow.”

Now we will look at Isaiah 58:6-14.

6 Is this not the fast that I choose: To release the bonds of wickedness, To undo the ropes of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free, And break every yoke?
7 Is it not to break your bread with the hungry, And bring the homeless poor into the house; When you see the naked, to cover him; And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
8 Then your light will break out like the dawn, And your recovery will spring up quickly; And your righteousness will go before you; The glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; You will cry for help, and He will say, “Here I am.” If you remove the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger and speaking wickedness,
10 And if you offer yourself to the hungry And satisfy the need of the afflicted, Then your light will rise in darkness, And your gloom will become like midday.
11 And the LORD will continually guide you, And satisfy your desire in scorched places, And give strength to your bones; And you will be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.
12 Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins; You will raise up the age-old foundations; And you will be called the repairer of the breach, The restorer of the streets in which to dwell.
13 If, because of the Sabbath, you restrain your foot From doing as you wish on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a pleasure, and the holy day of the LORD honorable, And honor it, desisting from your own ways, From seeking your own pleasure And speaking your own word,
14 Then you will take delight in the LORD, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

“As those two passages indicate, God rejected religious ritual divorced from compassion, mercy, and doing good.  The Sabbath above all days was a day to express goodness; to show mercy and kindness to the needy.  But the rabbinic restrictions had so strangled the Sabbath as to render such kindness forbidden.”

I think that I will do the rest of this section in the Morning SD as I  really don’t want to make this evening’s SD too long.

            Now there is another issue that I need to think about and that will happen in the second chapter of MacArthur’s commentary.  In the next chapters which is about 70 pages long John MacArthur dives deep in writing about the twelve apostles and while I was studying the book of Matthew he pretty much did the same thing, and so I am thinking about using what I wrote from my commentary on the gospel of Matthew.  Which ever way I go it is going to take a great deal of time, but it is important too look at these disciples, and the reason is that God used these 11 men (not counting Judas) to spread the Word of the Gospel around the world.  If it were not for these eleven men along with the apostle Paul then we today would not know about the gospel of Jesus Christ, so it is very important to look at their lives.
