PT-1 "The Goal of the Spirit's Revelation" (John 16:13b-15)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 1/22/2017 8:01 AM

My Worship Time                                          Focus:  PT-1 “The Goal of the Spirit’s Revelation”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  John 16:13b-15

Message of the verses:  “for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.”

In our study of John we have made mention that during the time when our Lord Jesus Christ was on the earth that He was not acting on His own initiative but was always doing the will of the Father who sent Him.  Now like the Son the Spirit will act in complete harmony with the Father as seen in Romans 8:26-27 “26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”  The Holy Spirit’s leading in the lives of believers will always be consistent with God’s revealed will in the Word of God as He will never lead anyone to violate the principles that are found in the Word of God.  When the Spirit speaks He does so through the Scriptures, the very ones that He inspired.  MacArthur writes “After all, to ‘be filled with the Spirit’ (Eph. 5:18) begins with letting ‘the Word of Christ richly dwell within you’ (Col. 3:17; compare Eph. 5:18-6:9 with Col. 3:16-4:1) since the ‘sword of the Spirit’ is ‘the Word of God’ (Eph. 6:17).”

We see specifically that the Holy Spirit will reveal to the disciples “what is to come.”  Now we have learned earlier that Jesus promised that the Spirit would guide the disciples into the truth and that phrase referred primarily to the New Testament as some of them would be responsible in writing the New Testament.  As we read the New Testament we see that it comprises of the four gospels and then it encompasses the entire sweep of history from Pentecost to the eternal state as found in the book of Revelation.  Peter writes in 2 Peter 1:2 “seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”

Let us no begin to look at what the ultimate purpose of the Holy Spirit’s ministry will be as we review a part of our verses and then comment on them:  “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.”

OK I am back from Church and want to finish this SD.  One of the thing that I pray for each day after posting my Spiritual Diaries onto my blogs is to pray that the Holy Spirit would glorify the Lord Jesus Christ through what I post onto my blogs.  I try also to remember to pray that the Holy Spirit will guide me in what I am writing so that it will all be true and it would be what He wants me to write so that He can use it to minister to the needs of those who read these Spiritual Diaries.

The Holy Spirit’s ministry is to glorify Christ by disclosing the truth about Him, in the same way that Christ glorifies the Father.  The Spirit does not point to Himself, but to the Son and MacArthur writes “a truth some Christian groups miss when they focus more on the gifts and blessings of the Holy Spirit than on the person and work of Jesus Christ.”  He then goes on to quote “The Spirit

‘would not present an independent message, differing from what [the disciples] had already learned from [Christ].  They would be led further into the realization of his person and in the development of the principles he had already laid down.  They would also be enlightened about coming events.  He would unfold the truth as the disciples grew in spiritual capacity and understanding.’ (Merrill C. Tenney, The Gospel of John, in Frank E. Gaebelein, ed. The Expositor’s Bible Commentary [Grand Rapids:  Zondervan, 1981], 9:158).”

Answer to yesterday’s Bible question:  “John the Baptist” (Matthew 3:14).

Today’s Bible question:  “Moses received the Ten Commandments on which mountain?”

Answer in our next SD.
