PT-2 The Inheritance (Col. 1:12)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 1/8/2017 11:39 PM

My Worship Time                                                                                  Focus:  PT-2 “Inheritance”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Colossians 1:12

Message of the verses:  “12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.”

Why do you think that believers are qualified to share the inheritance of the saints in Light?  It has to be all about the grace of God who when He saved us that we went from being unqualified to qualified.  MacArthur writes “The Greek text literally reads, ‘for the portion of the lot’ (eis ten merida tou klerou).  The partitive genitive (tou klerou) means that we each receive our own individual allotment or portion of the total inheritance.  Paul here alludes to the partitioning of Israel’s inheritance in Canaan (cf. Num. 26:52-56; 33:51-54; Josh. 14:1-2).  Just as the Israelites received their inheritance in the Promised Land, so also do we receive our portion of the divine inheritance.”  Now that is truly something that I would have never connected, but it does make sense to me.

Now the Bible has much to say about our inheritance and the first thing we discover about it is that it consists of eternal life as Jesus pointed out in Matthew 19:29 “"And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.”  Eternal life is much more that endless life as it has to do with quality of life, Christ’s life lived in the believer “"I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me (Gal. 2:20).”  “And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life (1 John 5:20).”

Next our inheritance includes the earth as seen in Matthew 5:5 “"Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.”  This speaks of when believers will help in ruling the world during the Millennial Kingdom.  MacArthur adds “The knowledge that we will inherit the restored earth should free us from the present pursuit of material possessions.  Someday we will receive far more than we could ever gain in this life.”

Thirdly we inherit the all the promises of God.  Let us look at Hebrews 6:12 “so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

In our next SD we will discuss when we will receive our inheritance.
