The Illegal and Unjust Conduct of the Court (Matt. 26:67-68)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/29/2024 11:32 AM

My Worship Time                                      Focus:  “The Illegal and Unjust Conduct of the Court”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                              Reference:  Matthew 26:67-68

Message of the verses:  “Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him, and said, “Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Now as I look at these verses which tells how those who were in this sham trial began to hit and make fun of the Lord, then I wonder how it is that I did the same kind of things, mostly in my mind.  I have mentioned that when I first became a believer a little over 50 years ago that I could not say a sentence with swearing and once I became a believer, by admitting that I was a sinner, born that way and then asked the Lord Jesus Christ into my heart that the Lord took my swearing away from me never to swear again.  Now the other day I was talking with my wise wife and mentioned that the Lord took my swearing from me when I became a believer but told her that I wish He had taken other things away from me too, and she said that He did not talk every bad thing away from you so that you would then depend on Him as you walk with the Lord.  That was a very wise statement.

Now I want to say some things about this short section of Scripture by first of all quoting a paragraph from John MacArthur’s commentary.  “Discarding the last vestige of decorum and decency, the supreme court of Israel degenerated into a crude, mindless rabble.  With total lack of inhibition, the religious aristocracy of Judaism—the high priest and chief priests, the elders, the scribes, the Pharisees, and the Sadducees—revealed their true decadence, as some of them spat in Jesus’ face and beat Him with their fists.”

I want to quote from Numbers 12:14 and then from Deut. 25:9, now remember what Deuteronomy means, the renewal of the Law as near the end of the 40 years of Israel’s wondering in the wilderness when all of the children of Israel who were twenty years old and older would die in the wilderness and so after the 40 years of wondering this new generation needed to have the Law given to them again.  I have often thought of what would have happened if they had not sinned then the book of Deuteronomy would not have been needed to be written, and when Jesus was on earth He quoted mostly from that book.  Now we will look at these two verses:  Numbers 12:14 “But the LORD said to Moses, "If her father had but spit in her face, would she not bear her shame for seven days? Let her be shut up for seven days outside the camp, and afterward she may be received again.’”  Deut 25:9 “then his brother’s wife shall come to him in the sight of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face; and she shall declare, ‘Thus it is done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.’ MacArthur writes “The impressive tomb of Absalom is still standing in the Kidron Valley just outside Jerusalem.  But for thousands of years that monument has been spat on by Jewish passersby to show their contempt for Absalom’s treacherous rebellion against his father, David.”

I want to finish this section tomorrow even though there is not much more to go, but because on the weekends I tend to have shorter SD’s because it is busier for me on the weekends.  6/29/2024 12:04 PM
