My
Worship Time Focus: PT-2 “Certainties Regarding God’s Judgment”
Bible
Reading & Meditation Reference: Jude 14b-16
Message of the verses: “saying, "Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of
His holy ones, 15 to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly
of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all
the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him." 16 These
are grumblers, finding fault, following after their own lusts; they
speak arrogantly, flattering people for the sake of gaining an
advantage.”
Let
me first remind you of where we are at in looking at these verses: “Enoch’s prophecy and Jude’s subsequent
comments set forth three certainties regarding God’s judgment on apostasy.” Now this even we will look at the third point
as we begin this SD.
As we look at this third point we
can see that the Lord will come with a definite purpose, to execute judgment upon many deserving recipients. Those people are all the ungodly who have utterly disregarded God’s law. So he is talking about those who have not
regarded the Law of God in the correct way and so, like in the case of the
Pharisees in Jesus’ day they made up laws of their own and they thought that
their laws were correct. John MacArthur
writes “The verb translated to convict (elegcho) means ‘to expose,’ ‘rebuke,’ or
‘prove guilty,’ which includes showing someone his error and culpability. When the Lord returns, the sins of the
ungodly will be exposed and the verdict rendered accordingly. The final sentence, as noted earlier, will be
eternal punishment in hell (Rev. 20:11-15; cf. Matt. 5:22; 7:19; 8:12; 10:28;
13:40-42; 25:41, 46).” Now I want to
quote Revelation 20:11-15 and comment on it a bit afterwards: “11 Then
I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth
and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead,
the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which
is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the
books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which
were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of
them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown
into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not
found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” As you notice the highlighted portions
from these verses you can see that there are books, one book was the book of
life, but the book that the Lord will use for the judgment on these unbelievers
will have, in my opinion are the works that they thought would earn the eternal
life, but it won’t. Perhaps everyone of
these unbelievers will have the chance to tell the Lord about all of the good
things that they have done in their life, but to no avail, as they missed out
while on planet earth to do the one thing that is needed for eternal life, and
that is to confess to the Lord that they are sinners and in need of a Savior,
because they can do nothing on their own to receive eternal life. I suppose that there will be a lot of these
people who will tell the Lord that they lived a good life while on planet
earth, but God wants perfection, and when a person accepts the Lord Jesus
Christ’s death as a pardon for their sins then that is the only way to receive
eternal life.
John MacArthur then goes on to write
the following and with this quote I will end this SD and Lord willing will pick
up the rest of this section in tomorrow’s SD.
“All the ungodly includes the apostates (see the discussion of v. 4
in chapter 11 of this volume).” That is
something that we have not looked at, because chapter four is in the study of 2
Peter. “As the righteous Jude, God must
punish them because of all their ungodly
deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which
ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. Enoch’s fourfold use of ungodly (asebes,
‘godlessness,’ or ‘impiety’) to describe the apostates (cf. 2 Peter 2:5-6;
3:7) identifies their basic sinful attitude; they refused to have a proper
reverence for God. All such reprobates—like
the immoral, irreverent, and blasphemous false teachers—are storing up divine
wrath and punishment for themselves in the day of judgment (Rom. 2:5; cf. 1:18;
1 Thess. 2:16; Heb. 10:26-27). Their
punishment comes because of their ungodly actions and their ungodly speech;
both their works and their words betray the wickedness of their hearts.”
