SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 3/9/2024 9:59 AM
My Worship Time Focus:
PT-2 “The Reaction We Have”
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Matthew
25:16-18
Message of the verses: “16 "Immediately
the one who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and gained
five more talents. 17 “In the same manner the one who had received the
two talents gained two more. 18 “But he who received the one talent
went away, and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.”
Let us begin by talking about the 17th
verse “17 “In the same manner the one who had received the two talents
gained two more. Jesus is saying that in
the same way that the slave with five talents invested it in order to have five
more talents; the slave with two talents did the same, and gained two more
talents. So both doubled the amount of
talents they were given to them from their master. How could they do this? Well the answer to that question is that they
both had great commitment to their master by making the most of what they had,
by maximizing their opportunities.
Now
we have to look at the third slave, and what he did with the one talent was
certainly not the right thing to do as he dug a hole in the ground and
hid his master’s money.” Notice the
phrase “his master’s money.” This was
not only the cause for this third slave but all three slaves, and that is
important to understand when one looks at the spiritual meaning of this
parable, it all belongs to the Lord.
MacArthur writes about this act “Hiding valuables in the ground was a
common practice in the ancient world, where there were no bank vaults or safe
deposit boxes. It was a simple and
sensible way to protect such things as jewels and coins (see Matt. 13:44).”
That
might have been a good practice in that time period, but that is surely not
what the master of this slave to do with his money as he wanted an investment
from his funds. So by hiding working
resources in the ground was hardly a sensible way to carry on a business and
earn a prophet, the slave had not received the one talent to protect it but to
use it wisely for his master’s prophet.
Although he had been given fewer resources than the other two slaves, he
had the same obligation to use what he had to his maximum ability” writes John
MacArthur.
Lord
willing in our next SD we will begin to look at verses 19-27, so I think this
will take us some time to get through these last verses of this very important
parable.
