Focus: PT-3 Intro to “Calm in the Storm”
Bible Reading&Meditation
Reference: Luke 8:22-25
Message of the verses: “Now on
one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them,
“Let us go over to the other side of the land.” So they launched
out. But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of
wind descended on the lake, and they beg an to be swamped and to be in danger.
They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, “Master, Master, we are
perishing!” And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and
they stopped, and it became calm. And He said to them, “Where is your
faith?” They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is
this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obeyed Him?”
John MacArthur
writes: “Creation itself reveals God’s
might power (Jer. 10:12).

“12 It is he who made the earth by his power, who
established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the
heavens.”
“The earth
is twenty-five thousands miles in circumference, eight thousand miles in
diameter and weights approximately six sextillion tons. It spins on its axis about one thousand miles
per hour and travels in its approximately one hundred fifty million-mile orbit
around the sun at about one thousand miles a minute. The sun itself makes a vast orbit around the
center of the Milky Way galaxy.
“At the other end of the size
spectrum, a teaspoon full of water contains trillions of atoms, while the
material in an atom accounts for only about one trillionth of its volume. If the empty space were to be squeezed out of
a human body, it would be reduced in size to a tiny fraction of a cubic
inch. From the vastness of space to the
infinitesimally small realm of the atom, God upholds all things by the word of

favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying,
and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be
afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb
and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son
of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father
David, 33 and he will reign over the
house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." 34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this
be, since I am a virgin?” 35 And the
angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of
the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called
holy—the Son of God.”
“1 ¶ In days a decree went out from Caesar
Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when
Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And
all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from
the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called
Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed,
who was with child. 6 And while they
were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and
wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no
place for them in the inn.”
“14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a
sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name
Immanuel.”
I usually do not stop my SD in the
middle of a paragraph, but as I look at this second to last paragraph in
MacArthur’s commentary I see that there are many more verses to look up, and so
I will try and finish this introduction in this evening’s SD.
