Intro to “Calm in the Storm”
Bible Reading and Meditation Reference: Luke
8:22-25
Message of the verses: “Now on one of those days Jesus and His
disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us go over to the other
side of the land.” So they launched out. But as they were sailing
along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they
beg an to be swamped and to be in danger. They came to Jesus and woke Him up,
saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He got up and rebuked the
wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm. And He
said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were fearful and amazed, saying
to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the
water, and they obeyed Him?”
I will continue quoting from
MacArthur’s introduction: His supernatural power over disease, death, Satan,
demons, and the forces of nature shows that He alone has the power to reverse
the curse and user in the kingdom. That
power awed and terrified those who witnessed it in action, as they realize that
they were sinners in the presence of God (5:8; 8:25, 37, 47, 56).”

“8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at
Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
“25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And
they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this,
that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”
“37 Then all the people of the surrounding country
of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great
fear. So he got into the boat and returned.”
“47 And when the woman saw that she was not
hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the
presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been
immediately healed.”
“56 And her parents were “amazed, but he charged
them to tell no one what had happened.”
“The Lord Jesus Christ had displayed
His power over the natural realm in an earlier incident recorded by Luke
(5:4-9).”
Luke (5:4-9)
“4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to
Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all
night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a
large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other
boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that
they began to sink. 8 But when Simon
Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a
sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all
who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken,”
“In this
far more dramatic demonstration of that power, Jesus calmed a raging storm on
the Sea of Galilee. The story may be
divided into three parts; the calm before the storm, the calm during the storm,
and the calm after the storm. The
epilogue, relating the disciples’ terror and the display of divine power they
had witnessed, might be titled the storm after the calm.”
