Introduction to John 10:22-42

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 8/7/2016 4:48 PM

My Worship Time                                                                Focus:  Introduction to John 10:22-42

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  John 10:22-42

Message of the verses:  In today’s Spiritual Diary we will look at a brief introduction to the last verses in the 10th chapter of the book of John.  There is one thing that we need to point out as we look at this introduction and that is that in these verses we will see the last of Jesus’ public ministry, from now on Jesus will only teach and spend time with His disciples and friends, like in chapter eleven.  I do have to say that this statement is true in John’s gospel as when we look at the other gospels we do see Jesus teaching or at least talking in the temple the last days that He would spend on planet earth.

We have seen and will see in this section also, that Jesus was telling the crowds and the leaders that He was the Son of God, but they would not believe Him.  As we begin this section they ask Jesus who He was and His answer is that He had already made it perfectly clear who He was and they would not believe Him.  Make sure that you understand that the reason that they wanted to know who He was, was that they might put Him to death, something they would eventually do, but not on their time table, but on His.

As we studied the Old Testament we have seen that it has prophesied that the Jews would reject Him and put Him to death.  The 22nd Psalm is a Messianic Psalm which speaks of the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion, 1500 years before it was even used to execute people.  The last half of the 52nd chapter of Isaiah along with the 53rd chapter also speaks of Jesus’ death.  There is another chapter in the OT that also speaks of the death of the Messiah and that is Daniel chapter 9, a chapter that I have mentioned on many occasions because of the prophecy that is seen there.  “"Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined (Dan. 9:26).”   The highlighted section is all we want to focus in on at it tells of the death of the Messiah as He will be cut off, which speaks of His death.

The Jewish leaders had made a tremendous mistake in not searching the Scriptures to find out whether or not what Jesus was teaching them was true or not, instead they focused in on their own false religion, not bothering to check to see if Jesus was telling them the truth.  If you go back to that 9th chapter of Daniel you can tell when the prophecy began and where it would stop with seven years left on it and they could have known exactly when the Messiah would arrive.  When we look at the “Christmas story” we see that Magi came from the East at the exact time Jesus was born, so they knew all about it, why did the Jewish leaders not know about it?  I believe that the Magi knew about this from the historical teaching of Daniel, which as stated is what the Jewish leaders should have looked at.

John MacArthur concludes his introduction which shows us where we are going in this section with these words:  “In keeping with that theme, in the concluding section of chapter 10 John punctuates the long presentation of our Lord’s public ministry (which began in 1:35) with yet another confrontation between Jesus and the Jewish religious leaders.  The dialogue between them unfolds in five scenes:  the confrontation, the claim, the charge, the challenge, and the consequences.”    The theme that was spoken of here is the nation’s rejection of Jesus.

Answer to yesterday’s Bible question:  “Sprinkled with blood from the altar and with anointing oil” (Exodus 29:21).

Today’s Bible question:  “Under what is carnal man sold?”

Answer in our next SD.
