SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 8/17/2016 10:49 PM
My Worship Time Focus:
PT-3 The True Shepherd
Bible Reading &
Meditation Reference: Zechariah 11:4-14
Message of the verses: We have looked at all of these verses in our
first two SD’s on this subject and so we will not look at all of them in this
last of three SD’s on our subject of “The True Shepherd.”
Dr. Wiersbe
writes “Matthew cited Zechariah 11:12-13 concerning the thirty pieces of silver
which were thrown down to the potter in the temple. Why would a potter be in the temple? Since the priests used many different kinds
of vessels, the services of a potter would certainly be necessary. So, from Zechariah, Matthew borrowed the
temple, the thirty pieces of silver which were thrown down in the temple, and the
potter to whom they were thrown.”
Now there
is a difference between what Zechariah wrote and how the events that Matthew
writes about happened. In the first
place in the book of Zechariah the money was given to the prophet, however in
Matthew’s account it was given to Judas who was the traitor. Now the prophet gave the money to the potter
in the temple, but Judas gave his wages to the priests and they were the one
who bought the potter’s field. Dr.
Wiersbe writes “What Matthew did was untie (the technical word is ‘conflate’)
elements from both Jeremiah and Zechariah, but since Zechariah was a minor
prophet, he named only Jeremiah, the major prophet.”
We have
mentioned in earlier Spiritual Diaries, especially when we were talking about
prophetic events that related to “The Day of the Lord,” that there is only one
true Day of the Lord, but when the prophets wrote about events that would take
place in the end times when the Day of the Lord would happen they were also
writing about events that would soon happen, but were not the ultimate Day of
the Lord. The same thing is true with
what we are looking at in these verses about the 30 pieces of silver, the
potter’s field and the betrayal of Jesus for this amount of money. I truly do not believe that Zechariah knew
that the things he was writing about were about the Messiah being betrayed, but
were events that would happen to him in this action sermon that he was
giving. The sad thing that we see in
these verses is that they prophecy that the Jewish people would reject their
Messiah even though He was dying for them on the cross as well as all who would
accept His forgiveness. Readers of this
Spiritual Diary need not make the same mistake that they made as you can
understand that your are a sinner, and confess that fact to the Lord and then
believe by faith that Jesus took your place and invite Him into your life to
forgive your sins and give you eternal life.
