Message of the verses: “And as Jesus returned, the people
welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him. And there came a man named Jarius, and he was
an official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus’ feet, and began to implore
Him to come to his house; for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old,
and she was dying.”
In earlier SD’s we have been looking
at Jesus and His disciples in a boat when a great storm came up and He was
sleeping. They woke Him up out of great
fear, and He calmed the storm. Next He
meet a man who was manic, actually there were two of them but it seems only one
got all of the attention. Jesus drove
out the demons and the man then became a missionary for the cause of Christ.
Now we are looking at the return trip across the lake and as the text says the
people welcomed Him back. Not too sure
about their motives for wanting Him back, but we will see that Jesus is about
to do healing to two people, one a twelve year old girl, and the other a woman
who had a bleeding issue for twelve years.
At this time I will begin to quote from John MacArthur’s commentary and
quote any verses that he mentions.
“As the story opens, Jesus had just returned
from the region of the Gadara, on the eastern shore of the Sea of
Galilee. The Lord had gone there seeking
relief from the ever-present throngs of people that followed Him wherever He
went. On the voyage to Gadara, Jesus and
the disciples had been caught in a powerful storm, which He miraculously calmed…After
they arrived, Jesus encountered two demon-possessed maniacs and casts the
demons that infested them into a herd of swine…The terrified inhabitants of the
region then begged the Lord to leave, and He got into a boat and returned
across the Sea of Galilee to the familiar town of Capernaum (8:37).” It kind of looks like MacArthur wrote
something similar that I wrote in my first paragraph.
“Upon His arrival, Jesus immediately
was engulfed by a large crowd (Mark 5:21) who, in contrast to the people of
Gadara, welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.”
(Mark 5:21)
“21 ¶ And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat
to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea.”
“Many in the
crowd were crippled, blind, deaf, and plagued by various other diseases. They had been anxiously awaiting His return,
hoping to be healed. Jesus was a hero
for those already healed, and for some the ultimate celebrity. They were captivated by the miraculous signs
He performed and further hoped that He would use His power to free them from
the yoke of Roman occupation.
“Unlike most religious leaders in
Israel, who avoided the common people so as not to be defiled by them, Jesus
secluded Himself only occasionally to rest, to give further insight and
instruction to His disciples, or to spend time alone in communion with the
Father. Apart from such occasions, His
entire ministry was spent in public, mingling daily with the people in town and
village streets, the fields, along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, and wherever
else they gathered. Summarizing His
ministry to Pilate, Jesus said, ‘I have spoken openly to the world; I always
taught in synagogues [cf. Matt. 4:23; 9:35] and in the temple [cf. John 7:14,
28], where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret’ (John
18:20).”
[cf. Matt. 4:23; 9:35]
“23 ¶ And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching
in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every
disease and every affliction among the people.”
“35 ¶ And Jesus went throughout all the cities and
villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the
kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.”
[cf. John 7:14, 28]
“14 ¶ About the middle of the feast Jesus went up
into the temple and began teaching.”
“28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the
temple, "You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come
of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know.”
(John 18:20)
“20 Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly
to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all
Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.”
“That was
consistent with His purpose in coming into the world—to proclaim the gospel
message of repentance and forgiveness (cf. Mark 1:38).”
(cf. Mark 1:38)
38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the
next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”
“Despite their eager welcome of
Jesus, the crowd was fickle. Some,
easily led by the hateful religious leaders, would eventually scream for His
blood and cry out, ‘Crucify, crucify Him!...His blood shall be on us and on our
children! (Luke 23:21; Matt. 27:25).”
(Matt. 27:25)
“25 And all the people answered, “His blood be on
us and on our children!”
“Others
were sign seekers (Luke 11:29) who would soon become disenchanted with Jesus
and abandon Him (John 6:66).”
(Luke 11:29)
“29 ¶ When the crowds were increasing, he began to
say, "This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no
sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.”
(John 6:66)
“66 After this many of his disciples turned back
and no longer walked with him.”
“Only a
few were enduring, true followers of Him (Matt. 7:14; 22:14; Luke 13:23-24).
(Matt. 7:14; 22:14; Luke 13:23-24)
“14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard
that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
“14 For many are called, but few are
chosen."
“23 ¶ And someone said to him, “Lord, will those
who are saved be few?” And he said to them, 24
"Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you,
will seek to enter and will not be able.”
