Introduction to Zechariah 12-14

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/27/2016 11:08 PM

My Worship Time                                                                              Focus:  Intro to Zech. 12

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:

Message of the verses:  This SD will be a rather short one as we begin to look at the last three chapters in the book of Zechariah through some of the commentary of Dr. Warren Wiersbe as chapters 12-14 of Zechariah are condensed into one chapter of his commentary which he entitles “Redeemed, Refined, and Restored.”

He writes the following introduction to these three chapters:  “In this second oracle, Zechariah takes us to the end times.  He describes the Gentile nations attacking Jerusalem, the Jews experiencing severe trials (‘the time of Jacob’s trouble’), and then the Lord returning in power and great glory to deliver His people and establish the promised kingdom.  What an exciting scenario it is!  But it isn’t fiction; it’s God’s own Word, and it will come to pass.

“As you study these three chapters, note the repetition of the phrase ‘in that day,’ which is found sixteen times.  ‘That day,’ is ‘the Day of the Lord,’ the day of wrath and judgment that the prophets wrote about (Joel 3:9-16; Zeph. 1), and that Jesus described in Matthew 24:4-31 and John in Revelation 6-19.

“Zechariah describes three key events.”  Those three events according to Dr. Wiersbe are 1. “The Lord will deliver Jerusalem” (Zech. 12:1-9; 14:1-7); 2. “The Lord will cleanse Israel” (Zech. 12:10-13:9); and 3. “The Lord reigns over all the earth” (Zechariah 14:8-11, 16-21).

We will begin the first one in our next SD, and in that we will find many sub-sections.
