My Worship Time Focus: PT-3 “A Fierce Anger”
Bible Reading and Meditation Reference: Jonah 4:1
Message of the verse: “But this was a great evil to Jonah, and he became angry.” “This change of plans greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry” (NLT).
It is my desire to finish this section this morning, and so I will finish it by quoting from John MacArthur’s commentary on it.
“The prophet went too far as to conclude that Nineveh’s salvation was not merely evil but a great evil. This response evidenced two blind spots in Jonah’s perspective: he was blinded by his hatred for his enemies, and he was blinded to the magnitude of God’s grace. Throughout the book, the Lord acted in great ways. He sent a prophet to a great city (Jonah 1:2); He hurled a great storm so that the sailors would fear Him (1:4, 10, 16); He appointed a great fish to rescue His servant (1:17); and He sparked a great revival, from the small to the great, in Nineveh (3:2-3). But Jonah vied these marvelous acts of God’s goodness through a negative lens. The Lord’s great acts of grace were matched by Jonah’s great act of animosity against all that Yahweh had done.
“Because he so strongly resented God’s grace toward the Ninevites, Jonah became angry, which in Hebrew, includes the notion of becoming hot. The prophet was burning in his displeasure, his temper boiling within him. Soon, that anger would manifest itself in words of bitter accusation toward the Lord (Johan 4:2-3; cf. Matt. 12:34; Luke 6:45). Jonah’s sin had not only twisted his mind but also taken control of his emotions, manifesting itself in words and actions that constituted an assault on God’s character.”
Jonah’ sin is something that I wonder if he had ever confessed to the Lord or did it just cause him to be ineffective for the Lord’s work.
Spiritual Meaning for my Life Today: “9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
My Steps of Faith for Today: Trusting that the Lord will give my wife a really good day as she gets her third infusion for her cancer this morning.
