The Anouncement PT-1 (Zech. 3:8-10)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 5/8/2016 9:03 PM

My Worship Time                                                                        Focus:  The Announcement PT-1

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Zechariah 3:8-10

Message of the verses:  “8 ’Now listen, Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who are sitting in front of you-indeed they are men who are a symbol, for behold, I am going to bring in My servant the Branch. 9 ’For behold, the stone that I have set before Joshua; on one stone are seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave an inscription on it,’ declares the LORD of hosts, ’and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. 10 ’In that day,’ declares the LORD of hosts, ’every one of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and under his fig tree.’"”

This announcement that is made in these verses is an announcement of things to come, and Jesus Christ is the One focused on in this announcement.  He is presented in three different images here, the Priest, the Branch, and the Stone.  In the sixth chapter of Zechariah we will see more about His priestly ministry and so we will wait for that when we get there.  Now as we look at the “Branch” we see that this is mentioned in the book of Isaiah “1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD (Isaiah 11:1-2).”  “2 In that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth will be the pride and the adornment of the survivors of Israel (Isa. 4:2).”  “5  "Behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land (Jer. 23:5).”  “15 ’In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch of David to spring forth; and He shall execute justice and righteousness on the earth (Jer. 33:5).”  12 “Then say to him, ’Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Behold, a man whose name is Branch, for He will branch out from where He is; and He will build the temple of the LORD. 13 “Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the LORD, and He who will bear the honor and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices’ (Zech. 6:12-13).”

Dr. Wiersbe writes “These four titles parallel four aspects of the person of Christ as seen in the four Gospels:  Branch of righteousness for David—Matthew, Gospel of the King; My servant the Branch—Mark, Gospel of the Servant; The man whose name is the Branch—Luke, Gospel of the Son of Man; The Branch of the Lord—John Gospel of the Son of God.”

Now we will look at the reference of Christ being the “Stone.”  Jesus is the corner Stone as seen in Psalm 118:22-23 “22 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone. 23 This is the LORD’S doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.”  A stone of stumbling  from Isaiah 8:14 and also 1 Peter 2:8 “14 "Then He shall become a sanctuary; But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over, And a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” “and, "A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.”  The smitten stone from Exodus 17:6 and also 1 Cor. 10$  “6  "Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink." And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.”  “4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.”  Next we look at the smiting stone from Daniel 2:34-35 “34  "You continued looking until a stone was cut out without hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and crushed them. 35 "Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were crushed all at the same time and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that not a trace of them was found. But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

We will continue to look at these verses in our next SD on the book of Zechariah.
