Confrontation (Zech. 6:9-11)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/9/2016 10:26 PM

My Worship Time                                                                              Focus:  Confrontation

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Zechariah 6:9-11

Message of the verses:  “9 The word of the LORD also came to me, saying, 10 “Take an offering from the exiles, from Heldai, Tobijah and Jedaiah; and you go the same day and enter the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah, where they have arrived from Babylon. 11 “Take silver and gold, make an ornate crown and set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest.”

As we begin looking at the next vision that Zechariah has understand that Dr. Wiersbe entitles this third main point from his commentary on Zechariah 5-6 “God crowns His King-Priest” and he has three sub-points in this third main point of which we will look at the first one this evening along with his short introduction.

He writes the following introduction:  “The eight visions came to an end, but there was yet another message from God to His servant.  In the visions, God has assured His people that He would cleanse them and protect them from their enemies.  But there was a message for the future as well.  During the ‘Day of the Lord,’ the nations would be punished for their sins, but Israel would be delivered.  At the climax of that day, Messiah would return, the Jews would see Him and trust Him, and the nation would be cleansed.  Then Messiah would be crowned as King-Priest to reign over His righteous kingdom (Zech. 9-14).”

Now as we read our verses for tonight we cannot be sure as to when God gave Zechariah this vision, but it looks like it was given right after the conclusion of the last one which is seen in the first part of chapter six.

As we look at these verses we see that God tells Zechariah that three esteemed Jews would be arriving from Babylon and they would be bringing silver and gold for an offering to the Lord which would be used for the building of the temple.  Dr. Wiersbe writes “They would stay at the home of Josiah, who had the wonderful nickname ‘Hen,’ which means ‘gracious one’ (v. 14).  After they arrived in Jerusalem, Zechariah went to see them.”

Can you imagine the surprise on their faces when Zechariah told them what they were suppose to do with the gold and silver offering that they brought to help with the temple, as they were to make a crown, actually an elaborate crown.  After the crown was made it was suppose to be put not on the head of Zerubbable who was the governor, and actually was in the bloodline of King David, but was to put it on Joshua the high priest!

These Jews obviously had two problems in mind once Zechariah told them what the Lord had revealed to him.  The first problem was they were to use this offering to help finish the temple, and the second problem was no one had ever put a crown on the high priest before, only on the king.  They may have been thinking that Zechariah was trying to oust the governor from power, making the high priest in power.  Dr. Wiersbe questions “How would this better the situation of the remnant and hasten the completion of the temple?”  Good question, and we will have to wait for the answer to come in our next SD.
