Introduction to Zechariah chapter Six

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/7/2016 6:19 PM

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  Intro to Zech. Chapter Six

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Zechariah 6:1

Message of the verse:  “Now I lifted up my eyes again and looked, and behold, four chariots were coming forth from between the two mountains; and the mountains were bronze mountains.”

Dr. Warren Wiersbe writes the following to help us understand this eight vision in the book of Zechariah.  “The images in this vision are similar to those described in 1:7-17, but the details are significantly different.  The emphasis here is on the horses and chariots rather than the riders, and their ministry is that of accomplishing.  God’s purposes rather than reporting on conditions in the Gentile world.  In the first vision, there were many horses and riders but here, there are only four chariots, each with their horses.

“The four chariots with their horses represent the ‘four spirits’ from God, that is four angels (Heb. 1:14) (‘Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?), assigned to different parts of the world to do God’s bidding.  ‘The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels’ (Ps. 68:17).  The presence of chariots suggests battle, and this implies judgment.  ‘For behold, the Lord will come with fire and with His chariots, like a whirlwind, to render [bring down, NIV] His anger with fury, and His rebuke with flames of fire (Isa. 66:15, NKJV).”

John MacArthur writes the following in his study Bible which I will quote, but my plan is to also look later at his sermon on this section and then we will do another introduction.  “The eight and final vision completes the cycle and connects with the first vision.  It pictures 4 chariots with the horses introduced in the first vision (1:8), symbolizing God’s angelic agents (cf. v. 5) swiftly carrying out His judgment on the nations just prior to the establishment of the messianic kingdom.”
