Bible Reading & Meditation                                                                Reference:  Nahum 1:3b-6

Message of the verses:

BETH

In whirlwind and storm is His way,

And clouds are the dust beneath His feet.

GIMEL

He rebukes the sea and makes it dry’

He dries up all the rivers.

Bashan and Carmel languish;

The blossoms of Lebanon languish.

HE

Mountains quake because of Him,

VAV

And the hills melt;

Indeed the earth is upheaved by His presence,

The world and all the inhabitants in it.

HETH

“His wrath is poured out like fire,

And the rocks are torn down by Him. (1:3b-6)

“in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. 4  He rebuked the sea, and maketh it dry, and dried up all the rivers: Bashan languished, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languished. 5  The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. 6  Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.” (KJV) (Nahum 1:3b-6)

This morning I begin the next section in John MacArthur’s commentary on Nahum by looking at 1:3b-6, and as you can see I have quoted it from two different versions of the Bible, and I believe that MacArthur is using a version similar to the NASB, and then after that I have quoted the verses from the KJV.  Now it is my desire to take my time going through this as I have been lately taking the time to quote most of the verses in MacArthur’s commentary as I go through his commentary, so let’s begin by quoting MacArthur’s commentary.

“Having described the vengeance and fury of God, Nahum proclaimed the power of God that carries out His judgment.  The prophet declared that even the sky stands at the Lord’s disposal to execute His wrath.  He explained that in the whirlwind and storm is His way, and clouds are the dust beneath His feet.  The whirlwind refers to the violence of a tornado, blowing away anything in its path (cf. Job 21:18).”  “18  They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carries away.”  “Additionally, the storm describes a fierce downpour or tempest (cf. Job 9:17).”  “17  For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause.”  “Together, these terms depict God’s comprehensive judgment in the form of a massive assault, so that whatever escapes being blown away by the whirlwind is overwhelmed by this storm (cf. Job 27:20-21; Ps. 83:15; Isa. 29:6; 66:15-16; Amos 1:14).”

“20  Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest steals him away in the night. 21  The east wind carries him away, and he departed: and as a storm hurled him out of his place.”

“15  So persecute them with thy tempest and make them afraid with thy storm.”

6  Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.”

“15 ¶  For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. 16  For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.”

14  But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:”

“Such is His way in judgment, as Yahweh stirs up the weather to bring calamity and destruction under His controlling hand (cf. Job 38:1; and Exodus 19:9; 16, Ps. 83:15; Isa. 29:6).

1 ¶  Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,”

“9 ¶  And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.”

“16 ¶  And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.”

“15  So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm.”

“6  Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.”

“Nahum also wrote that the clouds are the dust beneath His feet (cf. Exodus 16:10; Psalm 99:5; 110:1; 132:7; Isa. 66:1; Lam. 2:1; Ezek. 1:4; Dan. 7:13).”

“10  And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.”

“5  Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.”

1 ¶  «A Psalm of David.» The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”

“7  We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool.”

“1 ¶  Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?”

1 ¶  How hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger!”

“4 ¶  And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.”

“13  I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.”

“God can employ the weather to manifest His might presence, demonstrating that He is far more destructive than any horse, chariot, or man-made war machine.  In His vengeance against Nineveh, the Lord declared that He would use even the elements of the heavens to bring down wrath upon the city (cf. Ps. 29:3, 7; 102:26-27; Rev. 6:12).”

“3  The voice of the LORD [is] upon the waters: the God of glory thundered: the LORD [is] upon many waters.”

“7  The voice of the LORD divides the flames of fire.”

“26  They shall perish, but thou shalt endures yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: 27  But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.”

12  And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  As I have kind of changed the way that I am writing my Spiritual Diaries by adding most of the verses that are in the commentary it shows me something that I have known for a long time, and that is that the Bible is one book made up of 66 books, 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament, yet nothing conflicts in the Word of God, and that shows me that God is the author of the Word of God, using men with their own personalities to write it, and that is something that I believe is very, very special.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Trust the Lord to do the things in my life needed to bring glory to His Awesome Name.
