PT3 "The God of Irrevocable Condemnation" (Nahum 1:1)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/14/2025 3:55 PM

My Worship Time                                      Focus: PT-3 “The God of Irrevocable Condemnation”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                                     Reference:  Nahum 1:1

Message of the verses:  “The oracle of Nineveh.  The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.”

I begin this SD to say that it is almost 4:00 in the afternoon where I am living in Ohio, and this has already been a very long day as I was up early to clean out my driveway which was full of snow, and it is also pretty cold here.  I usually do my Spiritual Diaries early each morning but because it was Sunday and I did not get them done I decided to  do them after I got home from church this morning.  Now what I am going to do with this SD is to quote the remaining section of this from John MacArthur’s commentary, which is always something good to read.  I hope you will enjoy this and better yet, learn from it as I pray I will too.

“The prophet to whom God gave this video was Nahum the Elkoshite, whose name means ‘comfort’ or ‘ comforter.’  That name was fitting to the prophet’s message, in that his prophecy of judgment brought comfort to Israel as they witnessed divine justice fulfilled.  So, while this book is filled with descriptions of God’s wrath against Nineveh, it is ultimately a book that brings great hope to God’s people.  Nahum introduced himself as an Elkoshite, and though the location of Elkosh is unknown, associating a person with his hometown was a common method of distinguishing one’s identity.”  We went over this info in the beginning SD of this book. “By presenting himself with such specificity, Nahum indicated that he was willing to stand accountable for the prophecy he wrote (cf. Deut. 18:22).”  “When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken.  The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.”

“Despite Nineveh’s smug self-confidence and sense of security, Nahum’s divine message revealed that God was not blind to Nineveh’s presumption, pride, and aggression.  He would judge the inhabitants of this city for their evil.  In this prophecy, the Lord provided comfort to Israel both immediately and ultimately, assuring them that all His promises were true.  While God had earlier commissioned Jonah with a message of merciful warning (Jonah 1:1), He then delivered an irrevocable decree of judgment against Nineveh through His prophet Nahum.”
