PT-3 “Their Prophecies” (2 Peter 2:17-19)

EVENING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/21/2025 5:57 PM

My Worship Time                                                                        Focus:  PT-3 “Their Prophecies”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                              Reference:  2 Peter 2:17-19

Message of the verses:  “These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved.  For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved. (NASB)

“17  These are wells without water, clouds which are carried by a tempest, for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved for ever. 18  For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they entice through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, those who barely escaped from those who live in error. 19  While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a man is overcome, by him also he is held in bondage.”

I want to attempt to finish this section that we have been working on for a couple of days.  I have mentioned that I will be quoting from John MacArthur’s commentary, giving some of my remarks from time to time, and also adding many of the verse references that he has added in his commentary.

“As in Peter’s day, contemporary false teachers use their empty, haughty speech to entice their listeners by fleshly desires, by sensuality.  They do not care about bringing the truth to people’s minds; instead, they target people’s lusts—offering a carnal, feelings-oriented message that feds the sensual instincts of its hearers.  Often such teachers possess a personal charm and charismatic appeal that other people, especially vulnerable women, find attractive (cf. 2 Tim. 3:1; 4:3-4).”

“1 ¶  But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2  For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3  unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4  traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5  having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such turn away! 6  For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women, loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts,.”

“3  For there will be a time when they will not bear sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers. 4  And they will turn away their ears from the truth and be turned aside to fables.”

“Individuals who follow false teachers are those who barely escape from the ones who live in error.  In other words, they are men and women who through moral resolution are trying to better themselves.  They include people who struggle with broken relationships, wrestle with emotional ‘felt needs’ and spiritual problems, and desperately desire relief from guilt, anxiety, and stress.  They are dissatisfied with the lifestyle of the ones who live in error—the average mass of unregenerate humanity—and seek some better way to live (cf. Mark 10:17-22 or some form of religious experiences (cf. Acts 8:18-24).”  Now I will quote these verses before I move on.

“17 ¶  And when he went out on the road, one came running, and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do that I may inherit eternal life?” 18  And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one, that is, God. 19  You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honour your father and mother.’” 20  And he answered and said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.” 21  Then Jesus looked at him and loved him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and come, take up the cross, and follow me.” 22  And he was sad at the saying and went away sorrowful, for he had many possessions.”

“18  And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the hands of the apostles, the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19  saying, “Give me this power also, that on whomever I lay hands, may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20  But Peter said to him, “May your money perish with you; because you thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money! 21  You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. 22  Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to God if perhaps the thought of your heart will be forgiven you. 23  For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.” 24  Then Simon answered and said, “Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me.”

“But that does not mean they are truly redeemed.  In fact, in their dissatisfaction, loneliness, and self-betterment attempts, they are highly vulnerable to the seductive exploitations of false teachers.

“In appealing to these people, false teachers promise freedom and victory while they themselves are slaves of corruption.  Their empty guarantees include liberation, purpose, prosperity, peace, and happiness.  Yet, they do not even possess those blessings themselves.  In fact, they are slaves to their lust, for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved.  They are so thoroughly dominated and controlled by their sinful nature (John 8:34; Rom. 6:16) that their teaching is void of any divine power.”  We will now look at these verses.

“34  Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is the servant of sin.”

“16  Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves as servants to obey, you are servants of the one to whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?”

“Although they offer freedom, they are slaves to sin, utterly unable to bestow true spiritual freedom because they reject Jesus Christ—the only One who can truly liberate the soul (John 8:31, 36, Rom. 8:2 Gal. 5:1; Heb. 2:14-15; cf. James 1:25).” Now after quoting these verses this will end this SD, and this section, however, make sure that you think about this section we have been looking for the last few days as it is very important to understand.

“31 ¶  Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed him; “If you continue in my word, then you are my disciples indeed.”  “36  Therefore if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”

“2  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”

“1 ¶  Stand firm, therefore, in the freedom by which Christ made us free, and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

“14 ¶  Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, he likewise shared in the same, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15  and he might deliver those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

“25  But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, this man who is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in his deed.”
