Time Focus: Pt.-6 “The God of Irresistible
Power”
Bible
Reading &
Meditation Reference: Nahum 1:3b-6
Message
of the verses: “ב His way is in the whirlwind
and the storm, And the clouds are
the dust of his feet.4 ג He rebukes
the sea and makes it dry, And dries up all the rivers. ד Bashan
and Carmel wither And the flower of Lebanon
wilts.5 ה The mountains quake
before him, And the hills melt, ו And the
earth burns at his presence, Yes, the world and
all who live in it.6 ז Who
can stand before his indignation? And who can endure the fierceness
of his anger? ח His fury is poured out like
fire, And the rocks are thrown down by him.”
I
will now continue to quote from John MacArthur’s commentary on Nahum, and also
put in my own thoughts, along with adding many of the Scripture references that
MacArthur adds in his commentary.
“Thus, Nahum extolled Yahewh’s power
over the sky, the sea, and the land. In
the days of Jonah, God provided a glimpse of this power for the benefit of the
Ninevites. He exercised control over the
sky and the sea, sending a storm that caused the sailors to fear Him and that
compelled Jonah to go and preach to Nineveh (cf. Jonah 1:4, 15-16.”
“4 ¶ But the LORD sent out a great
wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea so that the
ship was about to be broken up.”
“15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the
sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men feared the LORD
exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.”
“God also
displayed power over the land as He brought Jonah safely to the shore so that
he would deliver the message of salvation to the Ninevites (2:10-3:5).”
“10 ¶ (2:11) And the LORD spoke to the fish,
and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.
1 ¶ And the word of the LORD came to
Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and
proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according
to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great
city, a journey of three days in breadth. 4 And Jonah began to enter the city a day’s
journey. And he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh will be
overthrown!”
5 ¶ So the people of Nineveh believed God
and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of
them even to the least of them.”
“But Nahum
declared that, as God had controlled the sky, the sea, and the land for their
benefit in Jonah’s day, so would He now wield that creation power for the
purpose of their destruction. The divine
force previously exacted in their favor was not being summoned against
them. Nahum’s message to the Ninevites
was that God’s former kindness should have led them not to presumption but to
repentance. They had taken the Lord’s
grace for granted and therefore He was preparing to judge them definitely (cf.
Rom. 2:4).”
“4 Or do you despise the riches of his goodness
and forbearance and longsuffering, because you are not knowing that the
goodness of God leads you to repentance?”
“And this
onslaught of wrath would be just a taste of what God will do against the world
when He returns to judge.”
Spiritual
Meaning for my Life Today: Let me just say that many people have doubted
the truth of the Bible in the history of the world, but the Bible is true and I
desire to continue to study it each and everyday as long as God gives me
breath.
People
doubted that Nineveh every existed, but in the late 1800’s the remains was
found, and so that is another case for the Bible being accurate when it comes
to history.
My
Steps of Faith for Today: I desire to continue to study the Word of God
as it is all true, and I also desire to continue to write my Spiritual Diaries
and put them onto my two blogs so that the Holy Spirit of God will send them to
the ones he desires.
