PT-3 “Their Perversion” (2 Peter 2:20-22)

EVENING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/24/2025 6:48 PM

My Worship Time                                                                         Focus: PT-3 “Their Perversion”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                              Reference:  2 Peter 2:20-22

Message of the verses:  “20  For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21  For it was better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22  But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “The dog returns to his own vomit,” and “The sow, that was washed, returns to her wallowing in the mire.”

I begin this evening’s SD in the same way that I begun the last’s Spiritual Diaries, and that is by quoting from John MacArthur’s commentary and then at times adding my own comments along with adding most of the verse references that he adds in his commentary.

In light of this, it would be better for them not to have know the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them (cf.  Matt. 26:24).

“24  The Son of man indeed goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been good for him if that man had not been born’”

“The way of righteousness is the Christian faith” (something we looked at earlier in the fifth chapter of MacArthur’s commentary earlier.)  “Because of the greater condemnation they face, false teachers would be better off not hearing about Scripture and doctrine than, having contemplated it, to reject it.  Their insincere consideration of the gospel gives them access to divine teaching in God’s Word, the holy commandment (cf. Ex. 24:12; Deut. 6:1, 25; Josh. 22:5; 2 Kings 17:37; Psalm 19:8; 119:96; Prov. 6:23; Matt. 15:3; John 12:50; Rom. 7:12; 16:26; 1 John 2:7).”  It will take a while to quote all of these verses, but Lord willing I will get it done.

“12 ¶  And the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and be there, and I shall give you the tablets of stone, and the law and the commandments which I have written for their instruction.”

“1 ¶  “Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and ordinances which the LORD your God has commanded to teach you to do them in the land where you cross over to possess,”  “25  And it will be righteousness for us if we are careful to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us.’”

“5  But be very careful to do the commandments and the law which Moses the servant of the LORD, commanded you, to love the LORD your God and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to hold firm to him and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul.”

“37  And the statutes and the ordinances and the law, and the commandments which he wrote for you, you shall be careful to observe for ever, and you shall not fear other gods.”

“8   (19:9) The precepts of the LORD are right,  Rejoicing the heart;  The commandment of the LORD is pure,  Enlightening the eyes;”

“26 ¶   I have declared my ways, and you answered me;  Teach me your statutes.”

“23   For the commandment is a lamp,  And the law a light,  And reproofs of instruction are the way of life,”

“23  But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came to him, and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries after us.’”

“50  And I know that his command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has said to me, so I speak.’”

“12  Therefore, the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.”

“26  but now was revealed, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, was made known to all the nations for the obedience of faith.”

“7 ¶  Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning.”

“But they ultimately renounce Christ and His saving truth.  Thus, they spurn the only true way of salvation and are subsequently left without any hope of eternal life.  The writer of Hebrews gives a similar warning against apostasy:

“4  For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5  and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come, 6  and if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify for themselves the Son of God, and put him to an open shame.” (Heb. 6:4-6)

“Later in that letter, the writer reiterates the same truth in different words:

“26  For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27  but a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation, which will devour the adversaries. 28  Any man who rejected the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29  Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose will he be thought worthy who trampled the Son of God underfoot, and counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30  For we know him who said, “‘Vengeance is mine, I shall repay,’ says the Lord.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31  It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Heb. 10:26-31).
