PT-2 “Their Prophecies” (2 Peter 2:17-19)

EVENING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/20/2025 7:27 PM

My Worship Time                                                                        Focus:  PT-2 “Their Prophecies”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                              Reference:  2 Peter 2:17-19

Message of the verses:  “These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved.  For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved. (NASB)

“17  These are wells without water, clouds which are carried by a tempest, for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved for ever. 18  For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they entice through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, those who barely escaped from those who live in error. 19  While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a man is overcome, by him also he is held in bondage.”

I have mentioned that I am using a different translation of the Bible, and also mentioned that in order, in my opinion, to make these Spiritual Diaries better I am now quoting from different authors and then when that author gives out references from the Word of God I will quote as many of them that I think will help the readers better understand the Scriptures, which is certainly one of my goals.

John MacArthur writes:  “In describing the false teachers, Peter chose two metaphors that represent water, the most essential natural commodity of the arid Middle East.  Due to its relative scarcity and vital importance, water provided the perfect illustration of spiritual sustenance.  In fact, the Lord Jesus Christ had used the same metaphor years earlier when He promised His disciples:  ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.  He who believes in Me, as the Scriptures said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water’’ (John 7:37-38).’

“Thus, like mirages in the hot desert sand, Peter describes the false teachers as those who promise what they do not deliver.  They are spirits without water, offering the spiritually thirsty nothing more than false hopes of relief.  They are also mists driven by a storm.  In the eastern Mediterranean region, sea breezes periodically brings in mist and fog that appear to signal rain.  But sometimes the atmospheric moisture stays only briefly and produces no significant rainfall. The land is left dry and parched; the inhabitants are left disappointed.  Like those mists, false teachers are without substance and provide no life-changing refreshment (cf. Jude 12).”  “12  These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, which are carried about by winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots;”

`Peter again did not hesitate to announce the terrible judgment that awaits false teachers, for whom the black darkness has been reserved (cf. Jude 13).”  “13  raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved for ever.”  The black darkness mentioned here refers to hell—the place of eternal punishment where both the fire (Matt. 13:42; 25:41) and darkness (Matt. 8:12; 22:13) coexist.”

“42  and will cast them into a furnace of fire: there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”

“41  Then he will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”

“12  But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”

“13  Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind his hands and feet and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”

“Despite the fact that they have no spiritual substance to offer, false teachers invariably claim great wisdom and knowledge—speaking out arrogant words of vanity.  Through their flamboyant verbosity and high-sounding rhetoric, they fool their followers into believing that they possess deep theological scholarship, profound spiritual insight, and even direct revelations from God.  With such ‘truths’ they dazzle their victims (Jude called such men ‘wondering stars,’  cf. Jude 13b).”  “wandering stars for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved for ever.”  “In today’s church, these words of vanity (cf. 1 Tim. 1:5-6; 6:3-5; 2 Tim. 1:14-18; Titus 3:9) , include the flowery vocabulary of religious ritualism, the convoluted doctrines of pseudo-Christian cults, and academic arguments of mainstream liberalism.”  I will not post those verses in the order given.)

“5 ¶  Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, and a good conscience, and sincere faith, 6  from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk,”

“3  If any man teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, 4  he is puffed up, understanding nothing, but obsessing with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5  useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, supposing that godliness is a means of gain. From such, withdraw yourself.”

“14 ¶  Remind them of these things and charge them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. 15  Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed worker, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16  But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. 17  And their word will have spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18  who strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they overthrow the faith of some.”

“9 ¶  But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions and quarrels about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless.”
