The People of Israel will Repent (Zech. 12:10-14)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 10/2/2016 9:42 PM

My Worship Time                                                                           Focus:  The People will Repent

Bible Reading & Meditation                                             Reference:  Zechariah 12:10-14

Message of the verses:  “10 “I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. 11 “In that day there will be great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 “The land will mourn, every family by itself; the family of the house of David by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself and their wives by themselves; 14 all the families that remain, every family by itself and their wives by themselves.”

We begin looking at the second main point under Dr. Wiersbe’s commentary which is entitled “The Lord will Cleanse Israel” and it covers 12:10-13:9, and we look at the first sub-point under this second main point.

Dr. Wiersbe writes “In delivering Israel from her enemies, or Lord’s ultimate goal is more than their national perseveration, for their spiritual restoration is uppermost in His heart.  He wants to reveal Himself to them and establish the kind of relationship that was impossible in previous centuries because of their unbelief.”

When we hear God’s word and also recognize His grace then we will repent if we are going to at any time.  Repentance is not something we work up to, and I am talking about repentance that is a part of salvation, for the Spirit of God will open our hearts to understand the truth that is found in the Word of God so that we will have a desire to repent of our sins and then trust the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and Lord.

As we look at verse ten we see the words “the Spirit of grace and supplication” and in the NIV the word Spirit is not capitalized showing that they believe this verse is not speaking of the Holy Spirit, but in the NASB we see it capitalized and so I believe that it is the Holy Spirit that is being spoken of here.  Joe says something similar “28 "It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. 29 “Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days (Joel 2:28-29).”  Now as we look at the later part of verse ten we see that the nation of Israel will look upon the Lord Jesus Christ as He returns from heaven and see that He is the one whom they have pierced and realize who He is.  Psalm 22:16 and Isaiah 53:5, along with John 19:34, 37 speak of Israel putting their faith in Him.

Now Zechariah goes on to mention families of different people in verses 11-14 and this shows that these individual families will come to repentance and faith in their Messiah.  He does mentions also families or clans of Israel will mourn.  We have to believe that this will be a very difficult time for those people as they for the most part of their lives had believed the lies that were taught to them, that Jesus was not the Messiah, and now they will realize that they are wrong and because of this they will mourn over their sin and repent.
