PT-1 "History" (2 Peter 3:5-7)

EVENING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 1/9/2026 7:50 PM

My Worship Time                                                                                        Focus:  PT-1“History”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                                  Reference:  2 Peter 3:5-7

Message of the verses: “5 For [a]when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed by being flooded with water. But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people.”

“The New Testament writers often appealed to Old Testament history to make a point (e.g., 1 Corinthians 10:1-13; Heb. 11; cf. Rom. 15:4), as did Jesus on several occasions (Luke 11:29-32; 17:26-32).” Now I will not quote the very long portions of Scriptures that are mentioned in the first section.

(e.g., 1 Corinthians 10:1-13; cf. Rom. 15:4)

“1 ¶  Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2  and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and the sea, 3  and all ate the same spiritual food, 4  and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5  But with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.  6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7  And do not become idolaters, as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” 8  Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed sexual immorality, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell. 9  Nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted him and were destroyed by serpents. 10  Nor murmur, as some of them also murmured and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11  Now all these things happened to them as examples, and it was written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12  Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13  No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to man. But God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it. 14  Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”

“4  For whatever was written before was written for our learning, that we through the patience and the comfort of the Scriptures may have hope.”

(Luke 11:29-32; 17:26-32)

“29 ¶  And while the people were thickly gathered together, he began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 30  For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of man will be to this generation. 31  The queen of the south will be raised up in judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, a greater than Solomon is here. 32  The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, a greater than Jonah is here.”

“Thus, it is not surprising that Peter would do the same.  In this case, he appealed to Old Testament history to further defend the second coming.”

“When the false teachers maintained their uniformitarian view of history (as talked about in verse four), they ignored historical facts.  The word translated escape their notice (lanthano) actually carries a more negative connotation, expressed better by the King James rendering, “willingly are ignorant of.’  The facts did not merely elude such mockers.  Rather, those individuals had purposefully shut their eyes to the truth.  They willfully ignored the historical evidence, choosing to disregard the biblical accounts of divine retribution.  Because they loved their sin, wanting to live as they pleased (cf. Job 20:12-13; Ps. 36:1-4; 73:5-12; Prov. 13:19; 14:9; 16:30; 26:11; John 3:20; Rom. 1:21-32; Eph. 4:17-19; 2 Tim. 3:2-4), they made conscious decisions not to consider the final consequences (cf. Num. 15:31; Deut. 7:9-10; Job 36:12, 17; Ps. 34:16; 78:49-50; Matt. 10:28; 13:41-42, 49-50; Rom. 1:18; 1 Cor. 6:9-10; Gal. 6:8; 2 Thess. 2:8-10; Rev. 21:8, 27).”  Ok this is going to take a while to quote these verses and after I am done with that I will be done with this first part of this section of “History.”

(cf. Job 20:12-13; Ps. 36:1-4; 73:5-12; Prov. 13:19; 14:9; 16:30; 26:11; John 3:20; Rom. 1:21-32; Eph. 4:17-19; 2 Tim. 3:2-4)

“12  Though evil is sweet in his mouth,  And he hides it under his tongue, 13  Though he spares it and does not forsake it,  But keeps it in his mouth,”

“1 ¶  «To the choir director. A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD.» (36:2) The transgression of the wicked man  Says within my heart,  That there is no fear of God  Before his eyes. 2  (36:3) For he flatters himself in his own eyes,  Until his iniquity is found to be hateful. 3  (36:4) The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit;  He has ceased to act wisely and to do good. 4  (36:5) He plots mischief on his bed;  He sets himself in a way that is not good;  He does not abhor evil.”

“5  They are not in trouble as other men,  Nor are they plagued like other men. 6  Therefore pride serves as their necklace;  Violence covers them like a garment. 7  Their eyes bulge with fatness;  Their hearts overflow with follies. 8  They are corrupt and speak wickedly;  They speak loftily concerning oppression. 9  They set their mouth against the heavens,  And their tongue walks through the earth. 10  Therefore his people return here,  And waters of a full cup are wrung out to them. 11  And they say, “How does God know?  And is there knowledge in the Most High?” 12  Behold, these are the ungodly,  Who are always at ease; they increase in riches.”

“19 ¶   A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul,  But it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.”

“9 ¶   Fools mock at sin,  But among the upright there is favor.”

“30   He winks his eyes to devise perverse things;  He purses his lips and brings about evil.”

“11 ¶   As a dog returns to his vomit,  So a fool repeats his folly.”

“20  For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light lest his deeds be exposed.”

21  For; although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22  Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23  and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God into a likeness of an image of a corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed animals and creeping things. 24  Therefore God gave them up to uncleanness in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25  who exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26  For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. Even their women exchanged the natural relations for those that are against nature. 27  Likewise also the men leaving the natural relations with women and were inflamed with their lust for one another; men committing shameful acts with men and receiving in themselves the penalty for their error which was due. 28  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what is not proper. 29  Being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness, whisperers, 30  backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31  undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, implacable, unmerciful; 32  who, although they knew the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death do not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.”

“17 ¶  This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you walk no longer as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18  having been darkened in their understanding, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; 19  who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”

“3  You, therefore, endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4  No man who engages in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.”

Now because of the length of this SD, and the length of the next set of verses I will begin my next SD on 2 Peter with that verse list.
