PT-3 “Judgment Affirms God’s Plan” (Nahum 1:9-13)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 01-03-2026

My Worship Time                                                   Focus:  PT-3 “Judgment Affirms God’s Plan”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                                Reference:  Nahum 1:9-13

Message of the verses:  “9 ¶  What do you conspire against the LORD?  He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time. 10  For while tangled like thorns,  And while drunken like drunkards,  They will be devoured like stubble fully dry. 11  Out of you comes  One who plots evil against the LORD,  A wicked counsellor.  12  Thus says the LORD:  “Though they are quiet and likewise many,  Yet they will be cut down when he will pass through.  Though I have afflicted you, I shall afflict you no more; 13  For now I shall break off his yoke from you,  And burst your bonds apart.”

I continue to look at John MacArthur’s commentary as he writes on these verses above.

“Nineveh’s judgment also confirmed God’s purpose to show mercy to His chosen people.  The prophet boldly attributed this mercy directly to Yahweh by declaring, ‘Thus says Yahweh.’  In promising to demonstrate mercy to Israel, God first acknowledged that the Assyrians were at full strength and likewise many.  From a human perspective, they seemed to be too mighty and too many to be defeated.  But, in reality, they were nothing compared to the Lord.  Hence, Nahum declared that even so, they will be cut off and pass away.  The Lord would cut off the Asyrian army, mowing them down as if they were the wool of a sheep (Gen. 31:19; Deut. 15:19) or the hair of a man (Jer. 7:29; Mic 1:16; cf. Job 1:20).”

(Gen. 31:19; Deut. 15:19)

“19  And Laban went to shear his sheep, and Rachel had stolen the household gods that were her father’s.”

19 ¶  All firstborn males that are born from your herd and your flock, you shall sanctify to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work with the firstborn of your herd, nor shear the firstborn of your flock.”

(Jer. 7:29; Mic 1:16; cf. Job 1:20)

“29 ¶  Cut off your hair and cast it away,  And take up a lamentation on the high places;  For the LORD has rejected and has forsaken  The generation of his wrath.’”

“16  Make yourself bald and cut off your hair, For your precious children;  Enlarge your baldness like an eagle,  For they will go from you into captivity.”

“20 ¶  Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and he fell on the ground and worshipped.”

“Under divine judgment, Nineveh’s military would pass away, an allusion to being washed away in a flood (Cf. Nah. 1:8).”

(Cf. Nah. 1:8)

“8  But with an overflowing flood  כ‎ He will make an utter end of its place,  And darkness will pursue his enemies.”

“The Assyrian army was but a passing shadow before God (cf. Ps. 90:4, 9; 103:15-16; 144:4; James 4:14).”

(cf. Ps. 90:4, 9; 103:15-16; 144:4; James 4:14)

“4  Make glad the soul of your servant,  For I lift up my soul to you, oh Lord.”

“9  All the nations whom you have made  Will come and worship before you,  Oh Lord, and they will glorify your name.”

“15  As for man, his days are like grass;  As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. 16  For the wind passes over it, and it is gone,  And its place knows it no more.”

“4  Man is like vanity;  His days are like a shadow that passes away.”

“14  whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour which appears for a little time and then vanishes;”

I will save the rest of this section until tomorrow morning, Lord willing.

Spiritual Meaning for my Life Today:  As I look at these verses, and there are many like this in the Word of God, the one thing that I can see is that God is in control of the things that are going on, on planet earth, and though sometimes I have a hard time dealing with those times in my life, and can like Job take courage that God never makes a mistake.

My Steps of faith for Today:  Trust the Lord for all of those circumstances that are troublesome to me, realizing that He can never, ever make a mistake.
