PT-2 "Ridicule" (2 Peter 3:3a)

EVENING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 01/02/2026 6:50 PM

My Worship Time                                                                                     Focus:  PT-2 “Ridicule”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                                    Reference:  2 Peter 3:3a

Message of the verses:  “Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking,”

This evening I want to finish this rather short section that I started last evening, and as usual I will begin by quoting from John MacArthur’s commentary and then add some of my comments and also any verses that needs to be looked up.

“The apostle continued with the common New Testament expressions in the last days, a phrase that refers to the entire time between Christ’s first and second comings (cf. Acts 2:17; 2 Tim. 3:1; Heb. 1:2; James 5:3; 1 Peter 1:20; 1 John 2:18; Jude 18).”

(cf. Acts 2:17; 2 Tim. 3:1; Heb. 1:2; James 5:3; 1 Peter 1:20; 1 John 2:18; Jude 18)

“17  ‘And it will be in the last days, says God,  I shall pour out my Spirit on all flesh,  And your sons and your daughters will prophesy,  And your young men will see visions,  And your old men will dream dreams.”

“1 ¶  But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:”

“2  (1:1) in these last days spoke to us by his Son, (1:2) whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also made the worlds;

“3  Your gold and silver are corroded, and their rust will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure for the last days.”

“20  Who indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for you”

“18 ¶  Little children, it is the last hour; and as you heard that the antichrist comes, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.”

“18  how they said to you, “There will be mockers in the last time who would walk after their own ungodly lusts.’”

“All throughout that long period mockers will come, seeking to undermine the church’s confidence in Christ’s return.  Although Peter used the future tense form of erchomai (will come), he was not limiting the mockers’ activities to some far-off future day.  Instead, he was indicating the certainty of their presence within the church.  There have always been those who mocked the promise of judgment or deliverance (cf. Isa. 5:18-19; Jer. 17:15; Ezek. 12:21-24; Mal. 2:17).”

(cf. Isa. 5:18-19; Jer. 17:15; Ezek. 12:21-24; Mal. 2:17)

“18 ¶  Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of vanity,  And sin as if with a cart rope; 19  Who say, “Let him be quick, and hasten his work,  That we may see it, And let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near and come,  That we may know it.’”

“15  Behold, they say to me,  “Where is the word of the LORD?  Let it come now!’”

“21 ¶  And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 22  “Son of man, what is this proverb that you have in the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days are prolonged, and every vision fails’? 23  Tell them therefore, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, "I shall make this proverb to cease, and they will no more use it as a proverb in Israel." But say to them, "The days are at hand and the fulfilment of every vision. 24  For there will be no more any false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel.”

“17  You have wearied the LORD with your words;  Yet you say, “How have we wearied him?”  In that you say, “Everyone who does evil  Is good in the sight of the LORD,  And he delights in them,”  Or, “Where is the God of justice?’”

“And such blasphemies will continue until the end of redemptive history (cf. Jude 18-19).”

(cf. Jude 18-19)

“18  how they said to you, “There will be mockers in the last time who would walk after their own ungodly lusts.” 19  These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.”

“To further emphasize his point, Peter used the repetitive expression mockers will come with their mocking.  By their senseless ridicule, false teachers—even today—attack Christ’s promise and any who believe it.  Their argument is neither sound nor logical; rather it is a vicious form of intimidation that derides hope-filled Christians as silly and uninformed.”

This is the end of this section and I have read and heard of statements that go along with what Peter is writing about here in this last chapter of his writings found in the Scriptures.  I suppose it could be said that perhaps he saved the best until last.  Lord willing tomorrow we will look at a rather short section entitled “Immorality.”
