of the verses: “5 For [a]when they maintain this, it escapes
their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed
long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by
water, 6 through which the world at that time
was destroyed by being flooded with water. 7 But by
His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire,
kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people.”
“For when they maintain this, it
escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and
the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that
time was destroyed, being flooded with water.
But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for
fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.” (NASB)
I have mentioned in earlier SD’s that this section of 2 Peter is a very,
very important part of Scripture, for in these verses we see the reminder of
how the world was first flooded with water in order to kill off all people and
animals which were on the earth, and this was because of sin. I have mentioned also in former SD’s that the
possibility of angels cohabiting with earthly women making a type of mankind
which was part angel and part human, and therefore could not be saved through
the blood of Jesus Christ who became a man in order to take our sins upon Himself
so that those who accept His forgiveness can be saved. Another thing that happened because of the
flood was that the water vapors which were above the earth to help stop the sun’s
rays fell on the earth to help flood it, and there was also water in the depts
of the earth to water the earth, as there was no rain during that time period
of the earth. Also the earth was moved
on it's axes and this caused the earth to have polls at each “ends” of the
earth. In recent history there was found
elephants on one of the polls that were frozen solid and in their mouths was
food, so that shows that there was an instant freeze of the earth. Now in my opinion, the earth was rather flat
before the flood, and because of the world wide flood the mountains were
formed. There is evidence of this as tropical
plants were actually found on Mt. Everest.
Noah’s ark was recently found on a mountain in Turkey. My point in all of this is that if one looks
for evidence of a different kind of world before the flood it can be found, and
also there is evidence as to why the world is different at this time. I will now
begin to quote from MacArthur’s commentary and also quote the verses that he
references in his commentary.
“As a
result of their self-induced blindness, the false teachers discounted two
monumental events in history that disprove their uniformitarian views. The first is the creation when, by the
word of God, the Lord instantly brought the universe, or heavens, into
being (Gen. 1:1). He needed no
preexisting materials (Gen. 1: 1-2:1; cf. Isa. 40:28; 45::8, 12, 18; 48:13; Acts 17:24) and no long periods of
time.”
(cf. Isa. 40:28; 45:8, 12, 18; 48:13;
Acts 17:24)
“28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the
LORD, The Creator of the
ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is
weary. There is no searching of
his understanding.”
“8 Drop down, you heavens, from
above, And let the skies pour
down righteousness; Let the earth
open, And let them bring forth
salvation, And let righteousness spring
up together. I, the LORD, have
created it.”
“12 I made the earth, And have created man on it. I, even my hands, have stretched out the
heavens, And all their host I have
commanded.
“18 For thus says the LORD, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, (He has established it, He did not create it in vain, He formed it to be inhabited), “I am the LORD, and there is
no other.”
“13 Indeed my hand has laid the foundation of
the earth, And my right hand has
stretched out the heavens; When
I call to them, They stand up together.”
“24 God, who made the world and all things which are
in it, though he is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples
made by hands.”
“Although
God has always existed (Ps. 90:2; 102:25-27; Rom. 1:20; Rev. 16:5), creatin
marked the beginning of the universe in time and space.”
(Ps. 90:2; 102:25-27; Rom. 1:20; Rev.
16:5)
“2 Before the mountains were born, Or you formed the earth and the
world, Even from everlasting to
everlasting, you are God.”
“25 (Of old you laid the foundation of the
earth, And the heavens are the
work of your hands. 26 They will
perish, but you will endure; Yes,
all of them will grow old like a garment; Like a coat, you will change them, and they
will change. 27 But you are the
same, And your years will have no end.”
“20 For since the creation of the
world, his invisible attributes are seen, being understood from the
things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead, so that
they are without excuse.”
“5 And I heard the angel of the waters
saying: “You are righteous, oh
Lord, Who is and was and shall be, Because you have judged these things.”
“Scripture,
most notably Genesis 1-2, supports a relatively recent creation and a young earth—one
specially created out of nothing in six consecutive, twenty-four-hour days. The phrase existed long ago does not
imply a creation billions of years old.
Several thousand years would certainly have been sufficient for Peter’s
use of that phrase. Moreover, a
young-earth view (in which the universe is not more than ten thousand years
old) is clearly supported by the larger context of Genesis.” If one reads about the genealogies in the
early part of the Bible, how long people lived before the flood took place then
they can see that our earth is a relatively young earth. I can say that after studying the Word of God
for the past, almost 52 years I have no doubt that our earth is not very old,
and that the Genesis account found in the Bible, like all other parts of the
Bible is true.
