Assurance of Divine Judgment”
Bible
Reading & Meditation Reference: 2
Peter 3:10
Message of the verses: “But
the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away
with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth
and its works will be burned up.”
This evening I begin to look at one
of my favorite verses in the entire Bible, especially because it is about
prophecy, prophecy that speaks of what will happen after the Rapture, after the
Millennial Kingdom and this also can be seen in Revelation 21:1 “1 ¶ Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for
the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.” I now begin to look at John MacArthur’s
commentary as this is the way that I have been doing my Spiritual Diaries,
along with some of my comments along with using the Bible verses he mentions in
his commentary.
“Based on his preceding arguments,
Peter confidently asserts that the day of the Lord will come. No matter what the false teachers may claim,
the evidence against them is overwhelming.
“In Scripture the day of the Lord
signifies the extraordinary, miraculous interventions of God in human
history for the purpose of judgment, culminating in His final judgment of the
wicked on earth and the destruction of the present universe. The Old Testament prophets viewed the final
day of the Lord as a day of unparalleled judgment, darkness, and damnation, a
day in which the Lord would completely destroy His enemies, vindicate His name,
reveal His glory, and establish His kingdom (Isa. 2:10-21; 13:6-22; Joel 1-2;
Amos 5; Obad. 15; Zeph. 1:7-18; Zech 14; Mal. 4).”
Now some of theses verse references
are chapters and so I will only copy and paste the ones that are shorter and
leave the rest for you to look up.
(Isa. 2:10-21; 13:6-22; Joel 1-2; Amos
5; Obad. 15; Zeph. 1:7-18; Zech 14; Mal. 4)
“10
¶ Enter into the rock and hide in the
dust from before the terror of the LORD, and from the splendor of his majesty.
11 The haughty looks of man shall be
brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the LORD alone
will be exalted in that day. 12 For the
LORD of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that
is lifted up— and it shall be brought low; 13
against all the cedars of Lebanon, lofty and lifted up; and against all
the oaks of Bashan; 14 against all the
lofty mountains, and against all the uplifted hills; 15 against every high tower, and against every
fortified wall; 16 against all the ships
of Tarshish, and against all the beautiful craft. 17 And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled,
and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low, and the LORD alone will be
exalted in that day. 18 And the idols
shall utterly pass away. 19 And people
shall enter the caves of the rocks and the holes of the ground, from before the
terror of the LORD, and from the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to
terrify the earth. 20 In that day
mankind will cast away their idols of silver and their idols of gold, which
they made for themselves to worship, to the moles and to the bats, 21 to enter the caverns of the rocks and the
clefts of the cliffs, from before the terror of the LORD, and from the splendor
of his majesty, when he rises to terrify the earth. 22 Stop regarding man in whose nostrils is
breath, for of what account is he?”
“6
¶ Wail, for the day of the LORD is near;
as destruction from the Almighty it will come! 7 Therefore all hands will be feeble, and every
human heart will melt. 8 They will be
dismayed: pangs and agony will seize them; they will be in anguish like a woman
in labor. They will look aghast at one another; their faces will be aflame.
9 Behold, the day of the LORD comes,
cruel, with wrath and fierce anger, to make the land a desolation and to
destroy its sinners from it. 10 For the stars
of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light; the sun will
be dark at its rising, and the moon will not shed its light. 11 I will punish the world for its evil, and the
wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and
lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless. 12
I will make people more rare than fine gold, and mankind than the gold
of Ophir. 13 Therefore I will make the
heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken out of its place, at the wrath of
the LORD of hosts in the day of his fierce anger. 14 And like a hunted gazelle, or like sheep with
none to gather them, each will turn to his own people, and each will flee to
his own land. 15 Whoever is found will
be thrust through, and whoever is caught will fall by the sword. 16 Their infants will be dashed in pieces before
their eyes; their houses will be plundered and their wives ravished. 17 Behold, I am stirring up the Medes against
them, who have no regard for silver and do not delight in gold. 18 Their bows will slaughter the young men; they
will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb; their eyes will not pity children. 19 And Babylon, the glory of
kingdoms, the splendor and pomp of the Chaldeans, will be like Sodom and
Gomorrah when God overthrew them. 20 It
will never be inhabited or lived in for all generations; no Arab will pitch his
tent there; no shepherds will make their flocks lie down there. 21 But wild animals will lie down there, and
their houses will be full of howling creatures; there ostriches will dwell, and
there wild goats will dance. 22 Hyenas
will cry in its towers, and jackals in the pleasant palaces; its time is close
at hand and its days will not be prolonged.”
“7
¶ Be silent before the Lord GOD! For the
day of the LORD is near; the LORD has prepared a sacrifice and consecrated his
guests. 8 And on the day of the LORD’s
sacrifice— "I will punish the officials and the king’s sons and all who
array themselves in foreign attire. 9 On
that day I will punish everyone who leaps over the threshold, and those who
fill their master’s house with violence and fraud. 10 "On that day," declares the LORD,
"a cry will be heard from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second Quarter, a
loud crash from the hills. 11 Wail, O
inhabitants of the Mortar! For all the traders are no more; all who weigh out
silver are cut off. 12 At that time I
will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are complacent,
those who say in their hearts, ‘The LORD will not do good, nor will he do ill.’
13 Their goods shall be plundered, and
their houses laid waste. Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them;
though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink wine from them." 14 The
great day of the LORD is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of
the LORD is bitter; the mighty man cries aloud there. 15 A day of wrath is that day, a day of distress
and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day
of clouds and thick darkness, 16 a day
of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the
lofty battlements. 17 I will bring
distress on mankind, so that they shall walk like the blind, because they have
sinned against the LORD; their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their
flesh like dung. 18 Neither their silver
nor their gold shall be able to deliver them on the day of the wrath of the
LORD. In the fire of his jealousy, all the earth shall be consumed; for a full
and sudden end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.”
I have a lot of verses already quoted here without
quoting some that are mentioned, and so I think that it is best that I stop
here so that this SD will not be too long.
Again I encourage you to read all of these verses along with the ones
that I did not quote here. As I look
over MacArthur’s commentary I see that there will be many more verses to quote,
but as I said this is one of the most important verses in the New Testament
that has to do with the end times.
