EVENING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 1/27/2026 7:35 PM
My Worship Time Focus: PT-2 “Eternal Perspective”
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: 2 Peter 3:12-13
Message of the verses: “12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” (ESV)
This evening I continue to look at “Eternal Perspective” which is the title to this section from John MacArthur’s Commentary on 2 Peter 3:12-13. I can say that I am running out of verses to look at in 2 Peter, and so I have ordered a commentary on the book of Luke. I have done every other of the gospels but Luke, and I have to say that it took John MacArthur 10 years to preach through the gospel of Luke, and it took me 5 years to go through the Gospel of Matthew. I have just ordered one of these commentaries to get me started on Luke’s gospel and I am not sure how many more it will take to get through it, but Lord willing I will continue to do it until it is done, Lord willing. Now I begin to quote from MacArthur’s commentary on these verses from above.
“Because of which, referring to the day of God, indicates that certain other events must first take place in order for it to occur. In preparation for that day, Peter reiterated that God will destroy the present, sin-cursed universe: the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!” We have gone over this in an earlier SD from verses 7, and 10 of 2 Peter 3. “There are several passages in the book of Revelation which, although describing tribulation events one thousand years earlier, offer vivid previews of the kind of power God will display at the final destruction:
“7 ¶ The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up. 8 The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. 9 A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed. 10 The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter (Rev. 8:7-11).
“17 ¶ The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a great earthquake such as there had never been since man was on the earth, so great was that earthquake. 19 The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and God remembered Babylon the great, to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath. 20 And every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found. 21 And great hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, fell from heaven on people; and they cursed God for the plague of the hail, because the plague was so severe.” (Rev. 16:17-21)
“8 For this reason her plagues will come in a single day, death and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her." 9 And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning. 10 They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, “Alas! Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.’” (Rev. 18:8-10)
“Following the final destruction of the universe, the day of God will arrive, and this corrupted world system will be forever abolished (Rom.8: 18-23; 1 John 2:16)”
(Rom. 8:18-23; 1 John 2:16)
“18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.”
“16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”
“According to His promise, that new day will showcase a new heavens and a new earth, meaning that God will create an entirely new universe (cf. Ps. 102:25-26; Isa. 65:17; 66:22).”
(cf. Ps. 102:25-26; Isa. 65:17; 66:22)
“25 Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away,’
“17 ¶ "For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.”
“22 "For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the LORD, so shall your offspring and your name remain.”
As you can see this section contains many verses which are included in MacArthur’s commentary, and so please just take your time to read over these verses as I believe you will see that they all have something to do with end times prophecy. I have mentioned that 52 years from yesterday’s date was the date that the Lord saved me, and after that I became extremely drawn to what will happen in the future and have spent untold hours studying it, with I’m sure will continue to study it, and although not all of 2 Peter is about end times this last chapter certainly is and that is why I enjoy studying it so much.
